Pinafore Skirt

Spring 2021

This skirt was the second project in my draping class. Instead of working off of an image, and then draping that design, we designed a skirt from scratch.

Here is the sketch I came up with. Our designs had to three elements that we learned in class. I chose: flare, pleats, and yoke/high waistband.

Here are the initial drapes. The pleats are called kick pleats, and are a type of inverted box pleats. the pleats  on the skirt and the darts on the top portion match up with the princess lines.

Initially, I purchased this polyester suiting that mimicked a heathered wool. Unfortunately this particular fabric turned out to be the worst choice for this project. Kick pleats need to be ironed heavily to get those nice crisp lines, but this fabric couldn't hold the pleats very well at all.

The fabric I ended up going with was some quilting cotton I used in another project. It was much easier to iron. The seams were finished with bound seams, and the waistband was hand finished.
