Beetle Corset
September 2021
This underbust corset is the newest addition to my collection, and it is just so beautiful. The pattern was taken from an extant garment in the book Corsetry by Jill Salen. The corset is from 1910, and the top portion was originally made from cotton lace ribbon which adds to the stability of the garment.

The first step to making this garment was to translate the scaled down pattern pieces into full scaled pieces. I took pictures of the pages from directly above, put them in Illustrator, and scaled them up appropriately. This specific pattern fit me very well and didn't need any adjustments on fit.

Mock up number one came out very nicely, and was made of one layer of polyester satin and one layer of cotton.

The final corset has a 10 inch straight busk, and 20 pieces of steel boning either 1/4 inch or 1/2 inch wide. The back is laced up with 32 metal eyelets. The inside of the the corset is lined with cotton, and the raw edges are bound with the fashion fabric.
